Fire, smoking ban in effect for Austin Parks

With the record-breaking drought Austin is experiencing this year, residents are being extra cautious about the potential for unintended fires. After fires recently threatened and destroyed many homes in Southwest Austin and in West Austin, residents are recognizing all too well that the beautiful oak trees and environmentally-sensitive areas of Austin are part of what we love – and resources we must protect.

Due to the persistent dangerous fire hazard conditions in the Central Texas area, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department is continuing the prohibition of building fires and smoking in the City’s parks system. The ban includes the use of wood or charcoal barbecue pits, grills, and smokers. Propane stoves are allowed in designated picnic areas only.

The continuation of this ban is necessary to ensure the safety of park patrons and to minimize the risk of wildfire in the department’s parks and greenbelts.
