It is also home to Austin Botanical Gardens, Umlauf Sculpture Garden, the Austin Nature and Science Center, and Barton Springs Pool: a 1,000 foot-long, spring fed lap pool that stays open all year and boasts a constant 68-degree temperature. Zilker Park also offers access to the 10+ miles of gravel jogging trails encircling Lady Bird Lake.
For camping, hiking, boating, and picnicking, Austinites head to Emma Long Metropolitan Park. “Austin’s a foodie haven—there’s always a new restaurant people are raving about. Our go-to is the downtown Whole Foods,” confessed Holden. “The kids adore it and we feel better about what they’re eating. And, there are lots of places to shop nearby.”
Austin’s urban core does offer a plethora of shopping and dining offerings. Historic Clarksville and the high-end Market District are home not only to Whole Foods Market but to a variety of retailers. The eclectic stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and cafes of South Lamar Blvd. (aka Sola) and South Congress Avenue (aka SoCo) are also a must-see. Shop ‘til you drop, then grab an exquisite brunch. Or, get dinner and a movie at iconic Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The bustling Second Street District boasts six blocks of vibrantly Austin restaurants, day spas, upscale boutiques, bars, and museums. Meet friends for brunch, enjoy dessert, and then window shop.
For upscale dining, shopping, and entertainment, residents also head north to The Domain: an outdoor mixed use development near Braker Lane.
