Austin Luxury Homes

An Austin-area luxury home with elegant landscaping at sunset

Luxury homes and mansions dot the greater Austin area, with the highest concentration found west of downtown in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Popular luxury home locations include areas near Lake Austin and Lake Travis, within Westlake, and within neighborhoods such as Barton Creek, West Rim, Seven Oaks, Rob Roy, Mt. Bonnell, and Davenport Ranch.

Verdant forests, rolling hills, flowing rivers, and panoramic views bless the Texas state capital. For city-lovers, luxury condo towers rise from the center of downtown Austin. Whether you’re seeking a modern retreat, a prestigious waterfront estate, a sportsman’s paradise, or the pinnacle of green living, Austin has a luxury home to exceed your desires.

Westlake mom Mia Holden works in the tech industry. “I moved here in 2002 for work. I met my husband while he was getting his degree at the University of Texas,” shared Holden. “On our second date, he took me to Austin City Limits music fest. I was sold—on him, and on living in Austin.”

Holden and her spouse enjoyed living in a downtown condo before starting a family. “Downtown life and culture were great, but when it was time for a dog and a big backyard, we moved to Westlake Hills.” Now they are 10 minutes from downtown with 2.5 kids and a third garage for the family boat. “We still have a clear view of the Capitol, but now we have wild birds, deer, and foxes, too.”

Luxury Properties

Luxury homes for sale in the Austin area offer the finest of craftsmanship, refinement, and quality. The best homes feature more than fine architecture, showcasing waterfront access or views, hill country or downtown views, and/or expansive grounds.

Austin’s luxury homes generally are considered to begin around the $1 million price point and go up into the many multi-millions. Austin luxury homes and mansions are available in an array of styles, such as Tuscan, French, Spanish, Colonial, Mediterranean, Contemporary, Classical, Ranch, Post-Modern, Green Building, and Equestrian.

Austin Luxury Home Amenities

Amenities for Austin luxury homes can range from personal boat docks and infinity edge pools with downtown views to wine cellars, guest casitas, and cabanas. Some homes even offer vineyards, equestrian facilities, helipads, and landing strips.

Austin also includes its share of country clubs: Austin Country Club is the oldest golf club in the city, founded in 1899. The club includes a 180-acre, 18-hole Pete Dye design golf course, a Harvey Penick learning center, 10 lighted tennis courts, a heated swimming pool, a fitness facility, boat slips, and a large clubhouse. Other popular country clubs include Barton Creek Country Club, River Place Country Club, and Lost Creek Country Club. Austin’s hill country setting creates an ideal environment for challenging and beautiful golf courses, including the University of Texas Golf Club, Avery Ranch Golf Club, Spanish Oaks Golf Club, Grey Rock Golf Club, Lions Municipal Golf Course, Harvey Penick Golf Campus, Hills Signature, Flintrock Ralls, and more.

In addition to golf, Austin offers an abundance of spas and resorts. Lake Austin Spa is one of the top U.S. spas, with extensive grounds along the shores of Lake Austin, plus pools, spa treatments, overnight accommodations, fitness classes, and wellness classes. Other well-known pampering stays are available at Miraval Austin, Barton Creek Resort and Spa, and Lakeway Resort and Spa.

Water-lovers of all varieties will enjoy a day of fun in the sun on one of Austin’s three lakes : Ladybird Lake, Lake Austin, and Lake Travis.

Austin Parks

The Austin area abounds with lakes, creeks, greenbelts, and parks. “When I came to Texas, I expected cowboys and dust bowls,” joked Holden. “I was enamored. I didn’t expect so much green! Austin’s an oasis.”

Zilker Park, with its playground, miniature train, dog park, and greenspace, is well known to lovers of the annual kite festival and the world-famous Austin City Limits festival. It is also home to Austin Botanical Gardens, Umlauf Sculpture Garden, the Austin Nature and Science Center, and Barton Springs Pool: a 1,000 foot-long, spring fed lap pool that stays open all year and boasts a constant 68-degree temperature. Zilker Park also offers access to the 10+ miles of gravel jogging trails encircling Lady Bird Lake.

For camping, hiking, boating, and picnicking, Austinites head to Emma Long Metropolitan Park. One of the largest parks in Austin, it features facilities for RV camping and tents, 12 miles of hike and bike trails, picnic tables, BBQ pits, fishing piers, swimming areas, volleyball courts, a splash pad, a basketball court, bathroom facilities, and more.

Just west of West Rim are the 227 acres of Wild Basin Preserve, with three miles of winding hiking trails that course through hill country woodland, across streams, and over grassy terrain.

Then there’s Red Bud Isle: a 13-acre, dog-friendly, leash-free, sylvan oasis that juts out into Lady Bird Lake just south of the dam. Red Bud Isle, also popular to canoers and kayakers, offers a fishing pier, picnic tables, and cypress-shaded walking trails.

Mayfield Park and Preserve crowns Tarrytown. This beautiful, turn-of-the-century property spans 22 acres and is home to lush gardens and ponds, roaming peacocks, and deer.

Mountain bikers, dog walkers, hikers, and outdoor climbers flock to 400-acre Barton Creek Greenbelt. In southwest Austin, it entails 4000+ acres of preserve. Barton Creek Preserve offers a protective habitat for wildlife, including endangered songbirds and the rare Barton Springs salamander.

Culture

For a cultural outing, Austinites visit The Contemporary Austin’s art museum at Laguna Gloria and the Texas Military Forces Museum on the grounds of Camp Mabry. Or, they can head into downtown to visit the Blanton Museum, Elisabet Ney Museum, or the Bullock Texas History Museum. Families with children flock to the Thinkery, Austin’s prized children’s museum. The Live Music Capital of the World, downtown Austin is also famous for its live music, colorful festivals, and nightlife.

“Last week it was the kite festival. This week it’s South by Southwest. Austin’s just a great place to work, play, and raise a family,” said Holden.

Shopping and Restaurants

“Austin’s a foodie haven—there’s always a new restaurant people are raving about. Our go-to is the downtown Whole Foods,” confessed Holden. “The kids adore it and we feel better about what they’re eating. And, there are lots of places to shop nearby.”

Austin’s urban core does offer a plethora of shopping and dining offerings. Historic Clarksville and the high-end Market District are home not only to Whole Foods Market but to a variety of retailers. The eclectic stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and cafes of South Lamar Blvd. (aka Sola) and South Congress Avenue (aka SoCo) are also a must-see. Shop ‘til you drop, then grab an exquisite brunch. Or, get dinner and a movie at iconic Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The bustling Second Street District boasts six blocks of vibrantly Austin restaurants, day spas, upscale boutiques, bars, and museums. Meet friends for brunch, enjoy dessert, and then window shop.

For upscale dining, shopping, and entertainment, residents also head north to The Domain: an outdoor mixed use development near Braker Lane. Stores like Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co, and Coach stand alongside fine restaurants. Afterward, enjoy a cinematic luxury dining experience at iPic theatre or an evening of fun at TopGolf.

The Hill Country Galleria is an outdoor shopping complex in West Austin that offers 1.2 million square feet of high-end department stores, fine restaurants, and entertainment. The Galleria includes a movie theatre, a Whole Foods Market, a salon and spa, a beautiful pavilion, and an outdoor waterpark.

When the weather is hot or rainy, Austin residents visit the 180 specialty retailers of indoor Barton Creek Square Mall. With a gourmet food court and a movie theatre, it’s one of the largest malls in central Texas.

Austin Luxury Home Neighborhoods

Austin is the power seat of the great state of Texas and is known for its dynamic downtown, live music, arts, and sports like F1 racing. Located on the cusp of the Texas Hill Country, Austin enjoys scenic hills created by the flowing waters of the Colorado River, and its picturesque surroundings are matched by beautiful luxury homes, mostly in four regions: central Austin, within the Eanes Independent School District, in West Austin, and along the lakes.

Central Austin

Many luxury homebuyers choose central Austin in order to live near the downtown business and entertainment districts, the Capitol, the University of Texas, and Lady Bird Lake. Homeowners can purchase modern high-rise condominiums with dramatic views of the Austin skyline – or character-filled historic homes in neighborhoods such as Tarrytown, Hyde Park, and Enfield.

Eanes ISD

A popular choice for luxury homebuyers is within the acclaimed Eanes Independent School District, which includes the central-west suburbs of West Lake Hills and Rollingwood. Near downtown and bordered by Lake Austin, homes are in a wide range of ages and styles, and many feature wooded topography.

West Austin

More luxury homes can be found in west Austin, from northern RM 2222 down to Barton Creek. RM 2222 neighborhoods, such as Cat Mountain, Jester Estates, and River Place, can offer incredible views and hilltop privacy and are zoned for Austin or Leander ISD. Homes in master-planned Barton Creek offer gated options and proximity to Barton Creek Resort and Spa and are zoned Austin ISD.

Lake Austin and Lake Travis

Austin is home to two lakes that are technically segments of the Colorado River. Lake Austin is central to west along 20 miles of constant water level shoreline and offers some of central Texas’ most prestigious real estate. Lake Austin borders the Austin Country Club and four school districts: Austin, Eanes, Lake Travis, and Leander. Further west is 200-mile Lake Travis, where more stunning luxury homes await.
