Westlake mom Mia Holden works in the tech industry. “I moved here in 2002 for work. I met my husband while he was getting his degree at the University of Texas,” shared Holden. “On our second date, he took me to Austin City Limits music fest. I was sold—on him, and on living in Austin.”

Holden and her spouse enjoyed living in a downtown condo before starting a family. “Downtown life and culture were great, but when it was time for a dog and a big backyard, we moved to Westlake Hills.” Now they are ten minutes from downtown with 2.5 kids and a third garage for the family boat. “We still have a clear view of the Capitol, but now we have wild birds, deer, and foxes, too.”

Austin Parks

The Austin area abounds with lakes, creeks, greenbelts, and parks. “When I came to Texas, I expected cowboys and dust bowls,” joked Holden. “I was enamored. I didn’t expect so much green! Austin’s an oasis.”

Zilker Park, with its playground, miniature train, dog park, and greenspace, is well known to lovers of the annual kite festival and the world-famous Austin City Limits festival. It is also home to Austin Botanical Gardens, Umlauf Sculpture Garden, the Austin Nature and Science Center, and Barton Springs Pool: a 1,000 feet-long, spring fed lap pool that stays open all year, and boasts a constant 68-degree temperature. Zilker Park also offers access to the 10+ miles of gravel jogging trails encircling Lady Bird Lake.

For camping, hiking, boating, and picnicking, Austinites head to Emma Long Metropolitan Park. One of the largest parks in Austin, it features facilities for RV camping and tents, 12 miles of hike and bike trails, picnic tables, BBQ pits, fishing piers, swimming areas, volleyball courts, a splash pad, a basketball court, bathroom facilities, and more.

Just west of West Rim are the 227 acres of Wild Basin Preserve, with three miles of winding hiking trails that course through hill country woodland, across streams, and over grassy terrain.

Then there’s Red Bud Isle: a 13-acre, dog-friendly, leash-free, sylvan oasis that juts out into Lady Bird Lake just south of the dam. Red Bud Isle, also popular to canoers and kayakers, offers a fishing pier, picnic tables, and cypress-shaded walking trails.

Mayfield Park and Preserve crowns Tarrytown. This beautiful, turn-of-the-century property spans 22 acres and is home to lush gardens and ponds, roaming peacocks, and deer.

For a cultural outing, Austinites visit The Contemporary Austin’s art museum at Laguna Gloria and the Texas Military Forces Museum on the grounds of Camp Mabry. Or, they can head into downtown to visit the Blanton Museum, Elisabet Ney, or the Bullock Texas History Museum.

Families with children flock to the Thinkery, Austin’s prized children’s museum. The Live Music Capital of the World, downtown Austin is also famous for its live music, colorful festivals, and nightlife.

“Last week it was the kite festival. This week it’s South by Southwest. Austin’s just a great place to work, play, and raise a family,” said Holden.

Shopping and Restaurants

“Austin’s a foodie haven—there’s always a new restaurant people are raving about. Our go-to is the downtown Whole Foods,” confessed Holden. “The kids adore it and we feel better about what they’re eating. And, there are lots of places to shop nearby.”

Austin’s urban core does offer a plethora of shopping and dining offerings. Historic Clarksville and the high-end Market District are home not only to Whole Foods Market but to a variety of retailers including lulemon athletica, Whole Earth Provision Company, Anthropologie, REI, Title Nine, and West Elm. Dining options include Corazon, Z’Tejas, and Swedish Hill Bakery.

The eclectic stores, coffee shops, restaurants, and cafes of South Lamar Blvd. (aka Sola) and South Congress Avenue (aka SoCo) are also a must-see. Shop ‘til you drop, then grab an exquisite brunch at South Congress Café or sushi at upscale Uchi. Or, get dinner and a movie at iconic Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.

2nd street district shopping austinThe bustling Second Street District boasts six blocks of vibrantly Austin restaurants, day spas, upscale boutiques, bars, and museums. Meet friends for brunch at lovely La Condesa, enjoy a cupcake at Delish, then window shop at Estilo, Etcetera Etc, and Finch.

For upscale dining, shopping, and entertainment, residents also head north to The Domain: an outdoor mixed use development near Braker Lane. Stores like Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co, and Coach stand alongside fine restaurants from Fleming’s to Whole Foods Market. Afterward, they may enjoy a cinematic luxury dining experience at iPic theatre, or an evening of fun at TopGolf.

The Hill Country Galleria is another recently developed outdoor shopping complex in West Austin that offers 1.2 million square feet of high-end department stores, fine restaurants, and entertainment. The Galleria includes a movie theatre, a Whole Foods Market, a salon and spa, a beautiful pavilion, and an outdoor waterpark. Enjoy a meal at Buenos Aires Café, then window shop at LOFT, Banana Republic, or Gatsby’s Men’s Wear.

When the weather is hot or rainy, Austin residents visit the 180 specialty retailers of indoor Barton Creek Square Mall. With a gourmet foot court and a movie theatre, it’s one of the largest malls in central Texas.

Neighborhoods

Austin is the power seat of the great state of Texas and is known for its dynamic downtown, live music, arts, and sports like F1 racing.
