published on August 21, 2013

kerbey lane austinBreakfast served all day can draw surprisingly large crowds at 3 a.m. in Austin, but as evening venues close, Austin’s 24 hour diners always fill up. Then, as nighttime revelers leave, a line for brunch begins to accumulate! Every local has a favorite diner dish, whether it’s pumpkin pancakes or vegetarian migas, and with affordable prices and locations throughout the city, it’s easy to see why Austin diners are world famous.

Kerbey Lane Cafe

With its original 1980 location still found on Kerbey Lane in Austin a short drive from homes in West Lake Hills, this local favorite diner has grown to five locations, each serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner 24 hours a day. Kerbey Lane was founded with a mission to provide affordable food cooked with fresh, locally grown ingredients, an endeavor that has strengthened throughout the years thanks to strong relationships with local suppliers and seasonal meal choices. Diners can find classic staples like buttermilk pancakes, burgers, biscuits and gravy, egg dishes, and internationally-inspired dishes including hummus and pita, Greek Chicken, seasonal pastas, and Tex Mex favorites like migas and enchiladas. The menu also offers vegan and vegetarian items: a daily vegan pancake, vegan breakfast tacos, and Portobello mushrooms as an option for salads, fajitas, and pastas.

Magnolia Cafe

Magnolia Café is a 24 hour Austin institution, located on Lake Austin Blvd. close to Lake Austin homes, and on South Congress Avenue. The diner, which was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, is known for serving fresh, delicious food to hungry patrons, including breakfast at all hours, with long lines but short wait times for brunch on the weekends. Magnolia is known for their mega-omelets, pancakes, migas, and reasonable prices, but their large menu accommodates every meal of the day and all diets, with many vegetarian options. Kerbey Queso, loaded with black beans, avocado, and salsa, is their top selling item and one of the reasons crowds are drawn every day.

Star Seeds Cafe

After a late night of drinking and dancing, an early morning start, or if you’re just feeling the need for classic comfort food, Star Seeds Cafe is known locally as a great place to fill up on diner fare. Famous for their classic Texas migas and breakfast served all day, it’s not uncommon to find Star Seeds filled with patrons grabbing a business lunch, drinking coffee while working on their next novel, or relaxing after a night on the town. Its central location makes it an easy stopping point for people from all over the city.
