History & Legacy of Sarah Beth Lively Middle School
Originally founded in 1886 as a one-room schoolhouse before expanding into a landmark multi-story brick campus, the facility was long known as Zachary Taylor Fulmore Middle School, named after a 19th-century Travis County judge and school trustee.
In December 2018, following extensive community dialogue, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees voted to rename the campus Sarah Beth Lively Middle School. Sarah Lively dedicated nearly 50 years of her life to the campus—serving 25 years as a social studies teacher and continuing for more than two decades as an active daily volunteer, student newspaper advisor, and beloved mentor in the South Austin community.
