Overview

Combine exemplary-rated schools, wide streets, shady sidewalks, and elegant architecture and you have Treemont: a coveted West Austin community. And possibly the best part? Its location: close to Zilker Park, downtown, Westlake High, Cedar Creek Elementary, and Hill Country Middle, pedestrian traffic is a daily ritual, including the sight of kids walking or biking to school.

Treemont was established in 1984 and encompasses 130 homes on ample, wooded lots. Many back up to the Eanes Creek greenbelt that runs through the neighborhood. Most were built in the late 90s, with others as recently as 2007. There are also a select number of condominiums in the neighborhood. Home features include gourmet kitchens, tile roofs, granite countertops, center islands, sprinkler systems, walk-in closets, covered patios, Palladian windows, cathedral ceilings, and top-of-the-line appliances.

“For sale signs never last long in Treemont,” said Susan Kim, who moved to Treemont in 1997. She said that although the neighborhood is relatively young, the trees are “magnificent” and “shade the homes and sidewalks. It’s like living in an enchanted forest on a quiet hill.”

Location

Just one exit away from downtown Austin, Treemont is ideal for employees searching for an easy commute downtown or to nearby companies such as Intel, Temple-Inland, EZCorp, Cirrus Logic, Trader Jo’s, BBVA Compass, HomeAway, and Whole Foods Market. The commute to Austin’s urban core is two miles and less than 10 minutes, and Austin Bergstrom International Airport is just 13 miles away.

Amenities

Treemont offers its own spacious park with a newer, enclosed playscape; picnic tables; and playing fields for kids’ football practice, adult boot camp, and other activities. To swim, residents often gather at Rollingwood Pool or bike to Zilker Park to jump into Barton Springs.

Fitness lovers appreciate that Treemont is just up the hill from the 10 plus miles of hike and bike trails around Ladybird Lake, not to mention it’s across the highway from the Spyglass trailhead of the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Prefer a gym? Many Treemont residents visit the Hills Health Club and Wellness Center close by on Bee Caves, where they can eat, walk the trails, shoot hoops, take classes, lift weights, and even swim. Treemont also is close to the YMCA on Cesar Chavez, Pure Austin on Lamar, Gold’s Gym on Congress, and Lifetime Fitness on South MoPac.

Golfers can play a round at nearby Lions Municipal Golf Course, host to such legends as Ben Hogan, Tom Kite, and Ben Crenshaw. Or, Lost Creek and Barton Creek Country Clubs are quite close.

For those who prefer water sports, Lady Bird Lake is less than a mile away, and the Pennybacker Bridge public boat ramp to Lake Austin is only a 15 minute drive up Loop 360. Lake Austin also can be accessed from Walsh Boat Landing, two miles north on Lake Austin Blvd.

For residents with elderly relatives, the Summit senior living facility is adjacent to Treemont. Kim said many residents of Treemont have aging family members living at the Summit. “They can walk with the kids to visit grandma.”

Libraries

To check out an e-book or enjoy story time, residents and their families visit Westbank Library, which lies less than a mile northwest of Treemont beside Westlake High School. Faulk Central Library on Guadalupe and Twin Oaks Library on South 5th Street also are close to the neighborhood.

Cultural Offerings

Treemont is under two miles from the live music, culture, and nightlife of downtown Austin. Plus, with Austin Lyric Opera and the Long Center right across MoPac, “Date night is easy,” said Kim.

The neighborhood is within biking distance of Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum, Austin Nature and Science Center, and Zilker Botanical Gardens, plus Zilker Park festivals such as Austin City Limits and the holiday Trail of Lights.

Two miles southeast is the South Austin Museum of Popular Culture, and the Blanton Museum of Art is three miles East on MLK. Mexic-Arte Museum at 4th and Congress offers contemporary Mexican, Latino, and Latin American art.

For easy fun a little closer to home, pot-painting at Ceramics Bayou is just a hop, skip, and a jump up Bee Caves, and music classes for every age are just down Camp Craft Road at Armstrong Community Music School.

Shopping and Restaurants

Residents often can be found enjoying Mira Vista, the outdoor shopping plaza right next to Treemont, at Bee Caves and Edgegrove. Chinese food at Suzie’s Kitchen, sandwiches at Panera Bread, and cones at Amy’s Ice Cream can be followed by trips to the brand new Trader Joe’s grocery store.

For clothes and gifts, Barton Creek Square Mall is only a couple blocks south. As one of the largest malls in central Texas, Barton Creek has over 180 specialty retailers, a food court, and a movie theatre. On Saturdays, residents can visit the mall’s extended parking lot to buy local produce from the farmer’s market.

Westbank Market, less than a mile northwest, offers a Randall’s Grocery and a dozen smaller retailers from Bank of America to FedEx and Tomlinson’s pet store.

Across the street at West Woods Shopping Center is the closest U.S. Post Office, a Michael’s, Great Harvest Bread Company, Steinmart, CVS, and resident favorite Las Palomas Mexican restaurant.

Proximity to downtown means Treemont is only a few minutes from the plethora of shopping and dining offerings of the urban core. This includes famous 6th Street, the bustling 2nd Street District, the high-end Market District, the art and wares of Historic Clarksville, the foodie finds of the Warehouse District, and the flagship Whole Foods Market.
