Wheatsville Co-op to Open New Store Near Ridge at Lantana
published on June 1, 2012
After more than 25 years in Central Austin, one of the town’s favorite homegrown stores is making its way south; Wheatsville Co-op recently announced it will be opening a new store in South Austin in the spring of 2013. This is exciting news for lovers of fresh food, healthy staples, and their famous popcorn tofu from an amazing deli. Residents of Ridge at Lantana especially have something to be excited about, as the new store will be located on South Lamar in the Lamar Oaks Shopping Plaza, a short drive from the subdivision.
The new store, at 22,000 square feet, will have an expanded selection of organic and local products, a wider variety of prepared foods, an artisan bakery, meat and seafood, and more indoor seating. It’s also bringing the values that come with the spirit of a co-op to the area. When choosing the location, they made sure that it was accessible by public transportation (two bus routes) and is a few blocks away from a USDA identified food desert, an area where people have low access to fresh foods. In addition, the store has donated about 20 percent of its net income to local community groups, which will continue and hopefully grow thanks to the new location.
In addition to the new south store, Wheatsville hopes to expand to up to five new locations in the next 10 to 15 years, plans that are a response to their customer demand for additional locations. The co-op is currently approximately 11,000 members strong, and will undoubtedly continue to grow as the stores expand in scope and locations. For anyone looking to become a member or just a regular customer at the new store, a home in Ridge at Lantana is great for both suburban living and easy access to the amenities offered in the area. The Austin Realtors at Regent Property Group can assist with finding the right place for any family looking to bridge the two.
