Susan G Komen Austin Race for a Cure Moves Back Downtown
published on August 26, 2011
Austinites love helping great charities, and the city certainly has no shortage of them – nor does it have a shortage of races to earn money for those charities. One of the most popular and beloved races in Austin is the Susan G. Komen Austin Race for the Cure, coming up on November 13, 2011. The race originally was held in Downtown Austin, but, for the past two years, moved to the Domain in North Austin where it saw a dip in participation.
This year, the race is moving back to Downtown Austin, where the city streets will accommodate an estimated 21,000 runners, volunteers, and supporters. The race will start at Congress Avenue and 18th Street, circle around the Capitol, and finish at 18th and Brazos Streets.
“I am glad the Komen Austin Race for the Cure is moving back downtown,” said Regent Property Group owner Brian Talley. “Clearly, location is important in more than just real estate, and if this move helps raise more money to cure cancer, it benefits all of us.”
Another big change for the race is that in years past it has always been held on the first Sunday of November, but this year it will be held on the second Sunday. One thing that won’t change, though, is that Dell is returning as the Presenting Sponsor for the seventh consecutive year. Komen credits Dell and its employees with significant contributions to both Komen and other local breast cancer programs through its sponsorship, race teams, and volunteer support.
The Austin race funds more than 12 Austin-area breast health organizations that deliver breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs, with 75% of funds going directly to programs and 25% going to research.
