Second Saturdays at AMOA

published on August 19, 2011

The Austin Museum of Art is hosting family-friendly “Second Saturdays” every second Saturday of the month until the end of the year. Also known as “Family Saturdays,” these events were created to bring Austin families together to experience creativity and art. AMOA has two locations, with Second Saturdays hosted now at the downtown location at Congress and 9th street. The program is open to families from all areas of Austin.

“The goal of Second Saturdays is to provide inter-generational learning including parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles with kids of any age to come to make something inspired by anything we have in the galleries,” said Abbey Mechling, Manager of Family and Community Programs at AMOA. “This way they can learn about what is in the gallery and then also learn how it is applied to all areas of art.”

Each event showcases an innovative and exciting art project and a family activity. August featured building miniature-sized furniture to mimic those on display in the museum – and family yoga. In September, the museum will host a workshop on patterned wall hangings, plus musical selections from the Austin Children’s Choir.

The attendance rate of Second Saturdays ranges from around 150 to 250 people, which Mechling says is the capacity for space in the downtown location. All workshops are free to the public and do not require an RSVP.

AMOA encourages families to visit downtown Austin to spend quality time together creating art and being creative. It is an inexpensive way to get out of the Austin area heat and enjoy cool air conditioning, while engaging in the arts.

“It is a program we love to offer, and we will be moving it to our other location at Laguna Gloria after the September date to allow for more people to attend,” said Mechling. When Second Saturdays makes its move to the Laguna Gloria location, it will allow for easier attendance of those with homes in West Austin as well as surrounding areas.
