NPR’s StoryCorps Rolling Time Capsule
published on January 27, 2012
Would you consider contributing to a national time capsule of sorts to preserve your family’s priceless stories? StoryCorps, a nonprofit organization that records personal stories, has rolled into Austin. StoryCorps takes everyday conversations from everyday patrons of the city, records them, airs them on NPR, and makes a second recording to be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The airstream trailer complete with small recording studio is parked at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and will be there until February 6, 2012. The recording appointments are open to anyone who wants to share their story, from Eanes ISD children and their mothers to Avery Ranch residents.
StoryCorps has been recording and sharing stories since 2003. With permission from its participants, StoryCorps airs newly recorded stories every Friday morning on NPR’s Morning Edition. The most famous story recorded by StoryCorps is “Danny & Annie,” the story of a Brooklynite couple that had been married for 27 years when they recorded their story. A heart-touching, animated video was made and has swept the nation, encouraging people from all walks of life. To experience the beauty of StoryCorps mission, watch animated Danny & Annie.
The airstream trailer and the StoryCorps team will be in Austin for only a few more days. It is important to make an appointment with StoryCorps before heading to the Bob Bullock Museum. The storytelling appointments fill up fast so if all the spots are taken, get on the waitlist! In case you don’t get the chance to record your story this time around, StoryCorps makes its way across the country year round.
The importance of recording special stories is invaluable as generations in the future will have the privilege of listening to what made life special in Austin during the turn of the century.
