Legend Oaks Presents “Ready, Set, Go” Firewise Program
published on November 17, 2011
After the tragic and devastating wildfires that swept through Central Texas during the middle of the year, it’s no wonder peoples’ perspectives have changed regarding safeguarding themselves against this happening again. Besides Bastrop and Steiner Ranch, Southwest Austin also was hit hard during the period when things were at their worst. 21 homes were destroyed or damaged in April in a fire that was originally attributed to arson, though investigators were never able to confirm that allegation.
There are many things that homeowners can do to help themselves and their neighbors. To address some of the issues that have come to the forefront since the fires, particularly those of property and personal safety, the Legend Oaks subdivision will be hosting the Austin Fire Department as they present the “Ready, Set, Go” Firewise program to residents in the community.
The presentation, set for Saturday, November 19 at 9 a.m., will take place at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church at 7815 Hwy 290 West. Its goal is “saving lives and property through advance planning.” Presentation topics include:
· Creating defensible space: how to make the ideal buffer zone between a structure and the wildland area around it to slow or prevent the spread of a wildfire to the structure.
· How to safeguard your home by using the proper structural materials, including a virtual tour of a wildfire ready home.
· How to create your own wildfire action plan.
The creators of the program, including the International Fire Chief’s Association and the Texas Forest Service, say, “It’s not a question if but when the next major wildfire will occur.” This program helps educate homeowners on how they can be proactive so they are ready when that unfortunate day comes.
Austin REALTOR® Brian Talley hopes he can help empower and support homeowners when it comes to protecting themselves against wildfires and encourages everyone in the area to check out the presentation.
