Lake Austin Fun: Austin Water Bikes

published on June 22, 2012

austin water bikesEnjoying Austin’s lakes from the middle of the water without ever touching water or getting in a boat? Now there’s a novel idea. It’s one that Austin Water Bikes “sits” behind, as their motto is “Never get wet.” The unusual contraptions that keep peddlers dry are a cross between a bicycle and kayak that sometimes make Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin look like a floating gym.

In addition to the nice daytime rides around the lake that AWB offers to customers, they also offer two nighttime options. The bikes are perfect for a moonlight ride with a sweetie or a bunch of friends. A cooler sits perfectly on the back of the bike, and if there’s free music along Auditorium Shores, this is a great way to enjoy a floating show. Another date option, or a great family option, is to take the bikes out to the Congress Avenue Bridge to wait for the 1.5 million Mexican Free-tailed bats to emerge from their concrete home. Bat watchers can go it alone or take part in a special bat tour for an additional cost (their website has a $5 off coupon). In addition to regular and evening rentals, they offer a low-impact Senior Spin Class and Team Building Workshops. They even offer FREE Fitness Fridays, allowing interested customers to check out the water bikes for free for 30 minutes, from 3-5pm.

For those looking to make water bikes a part of their weekly fitness routine, AWB offers great value prices on their Fun & Fitness Memberships that allow for multiple uses throughout the week with no contracts required. For those looking to make water living a part of their regular routine, purchasing a home on Lake Austin or Lake Travis allows for fun and fitness in many forms, and the Austin Realtors at Regent Property Group can help prospective buyers find the right place.
