Kimber Modern Boutique Hotel in Austin
published on June 20, 2012
Nestled into the landscape of the South Congress district in Central Austin, Kimber Modern was built from the ground up by architect Burton Baldridge under the guidance of owners Kimber Cavendish and Vicki Faust. With the goal to “create an exceptional architectural work of art, tailored toward the independent urban traveler,” visitors receive the care and consideration of a large luxury hotel, wrapped in a small boutique hotel package. No detail of comfort and design was left unconsidered, even privacy; their unique "invisible service" concept drops everything guests could want or need right at their fingertips.
Kimber Modern maintains a modern feel through décor and architecture, while retaining a warmth that modern aesthetics can lack. The beds, made of natural latex rubber, are covered with 5000 thread count Egyptian sheets. Rooms are given color names, rather than numbers, and each door has a keyless entry with a unique code set by the guest. And, the bathrooms create a world all their own. The Kaldewei bathtubs (in select rooms) and showers are of the quality one could find in the finest Austin luxury home, and emerging from the tub, guests can wrap themselves in lush robes made of clouds (or as close to clouds as a fabric can be). The full-sized shower essentials from eco-friendly Malin and Goetz make for less waste and a more natural atmosphere.
In addition to the luxuries the hotel provides, a sense of whimsy can transport visitors, whether they’re from other parts of the country or enjoying a staycation from their Lake Austin home. Sometimes described as an adult treehouse, every room opens onto a gorgeous courtyard that envelops a large oak tree. Guests can lounge on the outdoor furniture, admire a 25-foot glass water feature, nap in a hammock, and enjoy complimentary coffee, cocktails, and continental breakfast, depending on the time of the day. The Franke self-serve coffee maker is one of the most popular amenities at the hotel, creating coffeehouse quality drinks at the touch of a single button.
Other treehouse inhabitants include a pair of bunnies who have hopped their way onto the walls of the rooms, possibly there to remind guests that modern can be romantic, too. For anyone looking for a romantic or interesting getaway, the Kimber Modern is a great choice.
