It’s Scary How Much You Can Help Austin Pets Alive!
published on October 28, 2011
Surely, by now you’ve heard of Austin Pets Alive!, the incredible non-profit that has, over the past three years, made a tremendous impact on the lives of both homeless animals and the people who love them. By the end of the year, APA! will have homed almost 9,000 animals since their inception and has played a critical role in helping Austin, thus far, achieve 9 months as a No Kill city. In the past few months alone, APA! has adopted out almost 1,500 animals as part of the ASPCA Save a Life Drive Program that could help them to win $100,000 – critical funds that would allow them to do an even better job of “helping people help pets.”
The drive has two main components: the $100K grant goes to the organization (there are 50 national non-profits competing for the prize) that most increases their lives saved from August to October 2011, compared to those same months in 2010. APA! has set a goal of 2,000 adoptions during that period, and though that is a lofty number, they are well on their way with 1,547 adoptions. Their second opportunity to win funds, the Community Engagement Award, gives them the opportunity to win an additional $25,000 by effectively engaging their community in helping to save lives.
This weekend is the last big push before the end of the contests and holds many opportunities for Austinites (and other supporters who aren’t even in Austin) to help this amazing organization. Every little bit contributes so find some time to do what you can:
1. Vote on the ASPCA page for APA! – it’s super simple, you just need to do a quick registration, then you can go back to the site and vote every day through October 31.
2. ADOPT! Now is the time to adopt a pet, if you’ve been considering it. This weekend will be the last time before the holidays that they are offering $25 adoption fees for animals over 3 months old. You can adopt at any of their sites, but you might as well have fun while you’re doing it: Sunday, October 30 at 3 p.m. they’re hosting their Fall Petsival at their South Austin location, complete with music, free food and drink, games (including puppy poop bingo), and a screening of Cats & Dogs.
3. If you’ve ever adopted a pet from APA! you can leave a testimonial on their website that will help them with the Community Engagement award.
Be sure to check back here after November 11 – we’ll keep you up to date on how they did in the contest, other events they’re hosting during the holidays, and ways you can participate. And as always, if you’re currently performing an Austin home search, this is the blog to check to stay up to date on the top Austin luxury homes.
