Go Big and Go Austin

published on August 25, 2023

Austin, Texas homes are some of the biggest in the nation. And the lots, too. Austin homes ranked third in the nation for biggest homes, coming in at 2,020 square feet, according to a Storage Cafe report. Yard size came in at 8,620 square feet, ranking 12th in the nation. This placed Austin as sixth overall in the nation for size of homes and lots when comparing the largest 50 U.S. cities.

Austin is “an attractive destination for those who want it all: the roomy home, the big backyard and the thriving urban environment with plenty of things to love and enjoy. In fact, Austin’s abodes have a good 400 square feet on rival cities in California, including San Francisco and Los Angeles,” stated the report.

Of the other Texas big cities, Dallas ranked 13th, Arlington came in 14th, and Houston was 18th.

While homes in Austin are more expensive than their Texas counterparts, the report stated that builders are working to grow the home supply, with “20 building permits per 1,000 residents in 2022, second only to Atlanta.”

The report also cited smaller residential lots for newer construction. For homes built from 2013-2022, “lot sizes dropped to 7,200 square feet … 16% smaller than the overall city median.” However, home sizes during this period were even bigger at 2,400 square feet.

The top five cities overall for home and lot size were Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Omaha, Nebraska; and Nashville, Tennessee.
