Dunvegan Keep Allows Austinites to Live a Fairy Tale
published on April 23, 2012
Austin has no shortage of beautiful wedding, event, and photo shoot venues, and some of the best are tucked away, literally, in the backyards of creative Austin residents. Dunvegan Keep, located in South Austin, not far from the Travis Country neighborhood, is an homage to the beauty of architecture, Texas landscapes, and limitless imagination. Craig Turner is the vision and manpower behind Dunvegan Keep, which he runs with his wife, Cierra. When not used as the setting for weddings and photo shoots, Dunvegan Keep is also their home, where the couple lives with their three children.
A fascination with the open plains of Africa and its wildlife inspired Turner’s early artwork, and eventually led him to Africa with a camera in hand. Back in the US, he translated his photographs into wildlife paintings, which can be purchased as prints, but his creativity still spilled into other mediums, including landscaping and architecture.
Over the course of 20 years, Turner has built what Good Morning America dubbed one of the “Best Backyards in America,” and a favorite spot for photographers and brides. The grounds feature a romantic tower, a knight’s cottage with stained glass windows and mosaic tiles, sculpture gardens, lush trees and flowers, a Roman bath, fountains, and courtyards. A reception hall was built on the back of the house to accommodate weddings.
Dunvegan Keep is testament not only to the reputation of Austin as a creative city, but that home is a man (or woman’s) castle, sometimes literally. To start an Austin home search and find your own (figurative) castle, contact an Austin realtor today.
