Austin Sees Population Boom

published on August 1, 2012

The growth rate of the Austin area is currently paced at second in the nation, rushing the Austin housing market out of any slump it experienced in the recession years, and making Austin home searches some of the hottest keywords on the internet. Areas around Travis County with the biggest surges in population growth also include Round Rock and San Marcos, which, combined with Austin, have experienced a 3.9% population growth between 2010 and 2011, rivaling the growth of pre-recession years 2006 to 2008. The estimated population for the Austin metro area now stands at 1.78 million.

“Austin’s vibrancy attracts people from all over the world,” said Austin Realtor Brian Talley. “And if they weren’t already coming for the high quality of life and job market, they’ll be coming in the fall for the Formula One races,” he quipped. Like the races, Austin’s growth is in top gear with Austin luxury homes and desirable neighborhoods like the Lake Austin area attracting people from across the country with its mix of lakes, hills, and metropolitan living.

Texas claimed four of the slots for the nation’s fastest growing areas with populations over 1 million and holds rank with San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston. In the past decade alone, Texas has added 4.3 million new citizens, more people than any other state. The secret that “everything is bigger and better in Texas” has gotten out. Further, among the 50 fastest-growing counties for that time period, 12 were in Texas, more than any other state.

The reason behind Texas’ appeal can be found in its healthy economy and healthy citizenry, which are having children and living long lives. The population growth means the state is working to keep up with the demands placed on housing, infrastructure, education, and health care, but more contributors means more funding for civic projects, and more money circulating local economies, making new projects like the Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk, new schools, and the MetroRail exciting developments.
