It’s easy to picture beautiful jogging trails and golf courses when thinking of outdoor activities in Austin, but the city is also home to unconventional outdoor activities that range from secret caverns to shooting paint at friends. Below are a few outdoor activities that appeal to a range of interests: from the inquiring mind to the laidback sportsman to the desire to ambush your best friend!
Disc golfers in Austin can take advantage of several courses around the city, with the newest course located at the Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Park, a short drive from the Eanes ISD neighborhood. The Austin Parks and Recreation Department works with the Austin Park Foundation, local disc golf clubs, and businesses like Waterloo Disc Golf Club, the South Austin Disc Association, and the Disc Nation retail store to develop courses that challenge and delight fans of the game. Austin’s courses focus on rigorous nature preservation and erosion control to maintain the natural beauty of the landscape. Most courses offer 18-hole professional-level playing routes.
Located just north of Austin and close to Falcon Pointe homes, Inner Space Cavern remained hidden for 10,000 years. This prolonged seclusion made it the best preserved set of caves in Texas, and one of the few places where remains of prehistoric animals have been unearthed. Discovered by a Texas Highway Department core drilling team in 1963, a drill bit broke into one of the cavern’s chambers. The visitor center is located in Georgetown, on the outskirts of the Texas Hill Country. Beautiful examples of nature’s perfect artwork such as “The Flowing Stone of Time,” the mysterious “Lake of the Moon,” and the intricate “Soda Straw Balcony” beckon visitors. Natural formations within the cavern include helictites, ancient flowstones, and giant columns that delight people of all ages.
The ultimate combat paintball experience can be found within Austin city limits, a short drive southwest of downtown, close to the Circle C neighborhood. Bunkers, machine gun towers, crashed vehicles, and sniper nests create an interactive paintball war zone for players to navigate. Stunt Ranch Paintball has five active fields, each styled after a different war zone. The center provides new and rental guns, masks, HPA AIR/CO2, great paint pricing, and helpful referees. Stunt Ranch paintball is owned and operated by stunt and special effects professionals, making it clear the experience will be one of a kind. The center offers paint ball excursions for walk-on visitors, groups, and parties.
