Austin Community Farms: Springdale Farms

Springdale Farm is a lush, green pocket in a very urban and sometimes gritty East Austin community. The farm, situated on almost five acres just three miles from the State Capitol, is owned and operated by Glenn and Paula Foore. Urban farming is a popular project, from the small scale backyard gardens of homes on large lots like those in Rob Roy or Senna Hills, to the larger endeavors like those of the Foore family. The family-operated Urban Farm grows over 75 seasonal vegetable varieties and operates a public farm stand every Wednesday and Saturday Morning from 9 AM – 1PM. Austinites can stop by to pick up organic tomatoes, leeks, leafy greens, fresh eggs, and a large selection of produce that changes with the seasons.

Since its development in 2009, Springdale Farm has been committed to growing sustainable, safe produce for anyone in the area interested in eating fresh, local food, and works daily to create a sustainable future “for ourselves and our community.”  The farm property also serves as the home for the family’s landscaping and lawn maintenance company, Texas Trees & Landscapes, which can help maintain a beautiful lawn in any Austin luxury home.

Visiting the farm is a fun education in sustainable farming and poultry keeping. The farm regularly teams up with local organizations to host educational food, music and arts events, participates in the East Austin Urban Farm Tour, and recently was named Edible Communities Local Hero in the Farm / Farmer category.

The farm is also regularly available for weddings, private parties, supper clubs, and corporate events. The farm’s ducks and chickens are frequent interlopers at private events and help keep the vegetables in the garden and the guests bug free.
