Austin City Limits’ New Home at the W Hotel
published on October 21, 2011
Austin’s title as the live music capital of the world is a treasured part of Austin’s persona, alongside being “weird.” A live show can be found every day of the week, sometimes as early as breakfast, and if a show is played, Austinites will be there. One of the jewels in Austin’s crowning title is the Austin City Limits show, taped before a live studio audience and aired on national television. Recently, the show relocated from its 36-year home on the University of Texas Campus into a new venue, The Moody Theatre, inside the new and urban W Hotel, located in downtown Austin.
Recently awarded “best new live music scene game-changer” by the Austin Chronicle, the summary of the venue’s selection states, “Austin City Limits has done what no other television series has been able to do in the history of American television. Inspired by the music scene that continues to thrive in Austin, Texas, the show has, for more than 36 years, presented viewing audiences with live concerts from many of the world’s most acclaimed, accomplished and pioneering talents.” In addition to winning an award from the Chronicle’s readers, Austin City Limits is the only television show to ever be awarded the National Medal of the Arts by the President of the United States.
The show is famous for its powerhouse record of artists, consistently bringing in the biggest and most popular names in the music industry. This year alone the venue has already hosted Willie Nelson, The Arcade Fire, Mumford and Sons, Steve Miller, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Santana, and even President Obama. Upcoming acts are kept up to date on the Austin City Limits Live website, and crowds are already eagerly anticipating the arrival of Aretha Franklin. The crowd with tickets shouldn’t worry about a bad seat, though, as the theatre is designed so that everyone, from standing room only on the ground floor to the theatre style seats in the mezzanine, are guaranteed high visibility of the stage.
The W Hotel, home to The Moody Theatre, is also a new kid on the block in the downtown cityscape. Already popular with locals for its “secret” Red Room bar and unique drink concoctions, the Hotel, part of the family of W Hotels, sets a new standard for contemporary luxury. Located in the increasingly vibrant 2nd Street District, the Hotel offers guests in its 251 rooms sweeping views of Lady Bird Lake and the downtown skyline, state of the art fitness equipment and spa treatments, and a beautiful pool set against Austin scenery.
Downtown Austin is ideally situated in the middle of the city, so residents living in South Austin, Northwest Austin, or in the prime spot of Central Austin can easily make it down to 2nd Street to enjoy an overnight getaway or a live show.
