Austin Bike Shops Cater to Cycling Fever
published on April 4, 2012
When it comes to the best places to ride a bike, Austin consistently is ranked among the top 20 cities in the US. Ample bicycle lanes, parking, races, and tracks (such as the Veloway near Circle C,) ensure cyclists’ safety and training options. Austin cyclists are spoiled when it comes to bike selection, too. Here, there are bike shops that cater to niche cycling, general interest, and everything in between. No matter where your Austin home search takes you, you won’t be far from one of these shops.
Mellow Johnny’s
Austin native and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong opened this full-service shop in central Austin less than 5 years ago. The cavernous, fully stocked showroom carries bikes for every type of cyclist: fixed gears, mountain bikes, cyclo-cross, tandem, touring, and more. Mellow Johnny’s also has locker rental and showers, to help encourage people within the city to commute to work by bike. Don’t forget to drop by their in-house café for an all-natural scone and a cup of fair trade coffee before your ride.
Lake Travis residents finally have an answer to their cycling prayers. This quaint bike shop in the Hill Country Galleria specializes in mainly road and mountain bikes – but can service any cycle. The Green Mamba, LT Cyclery’s support van, can be sent out to assist cyclists who undertake the “Dam Loop,” the 20+ mile stretch to Mansfield Dam.
Bicycle Sport Shop
With locations near Avery Ranch and the Greenbelt, Bicycle Sport Shop is the largest full-service bike shop in all of Austin. Here, you’ll find amazing deals on last season’s bikes – and the knowledgeable, friendly staff will take the time to custom fit you to your cycle after your purchase. BSS also offers free tune-ups for a year (two maximum) and has a number of free bike safety and maintenance classes open to the public.
South Austin’s favorite bike store has a laid-back vibe and a small business charm – but that doesn’t mean they lack industry know-how. This shop has a good selection of parts and accoutrements for your next upgrade, especially if you ride a fixed gear or single speed bike. If bigger stores intimidate you and you need more individual attention, try a small, locally-owed shop like this.
