Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Renovations Include a Carbon-Neutral Airfield

With nonstop service to 41 destinations in the U.S. and Mexico, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport served a record 9.4 million passengers in 2012. Passenger traffic hit record numbers yet again in May 2013, increasing 7% from 2012. Yet, in addition to volume, travelers are seeing signs of other positive and significant changes at ABIA.

Passengers may notice the presence and noise of construction workers at ABIA over the next few months as efforts are underway to refurbish the concourse and to create carbon neutral airfield operation.

By fall 2013, carbon neutral operation will be in effect for gates 6, 8, 10, 11, and 18. Austin Energy’s GreenChoice will provide the wind-turbine-generated electricity. (GreenChoice provides green energy for Austin businesses and homes from Avery Ranch to Mueller.)

Twenty electric charging stations are coming to Austin-Bergstrom’s airfield to power luggage tugs and belt loaders operated by Delta, United, and Southwest Airlines. Converting to electricity will vastly improve air quality, reducing diesel fuel use by approximately 25,000 gallons annually.

As part of a comprehensive renovation, Terrazzo flooring has been poured in ticketing level restrooms near gates 20 and 21, and glazed porcelain tile has been placed on the walls. Fixtures and finishes will be installed soon, and all renovations will be complete by spring 2014.

Refurbishment work at gate 15 on the passenger boarding bridge is now complete and includes new carpeting, paint, and other upgrades. Work has moved to gate 17, which will undergo similar renovations. All of the airport’s boarding bridges will be refurbished by winter 2014.
