Austin-Area Schools Make the Grade

A recently released report by children’s advocacy and research group Children at Risk shows 25 Austin-area public and charter high schools scored an “A” or “B” based on a wide range of criteria, including state testing scores, graduation rates, attendance rates, and course work. Even more middle schools and elementary schools made the grade, also with many charter schools achieving high rankings.

The top high schools were Harmony Science Academy North Austin, Nyos Charter School, Westlake, Westwood, Star Charter School, Dripping Springs, McNeil, Anderson, Lake Travis, and Bowie.

The top middle schools were Canyon Vista, KIPP Austin College Prep, Ann Richards School for Young Women Leadership, Harmony School Of Science – Austin, West Ridge, Four Points, Liberty Hill, Dripping Springs, Hill Country, Lake Travis, and Gorzycki.

The top elementary schools were Spicewood, Canyon Creek, Bryker Woods, Lee, Cactus Ranch, Casis, Becker, Mathews, Barton Creek, and Gullett.

The top public schools were from several area school districts, including Austin ISD, Eanes ISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Round Rock ISD, and others. Top charter schools were spread throughout the region but were mainly in Austin.

The highest ranking Central Texas school, when compared to statewide results, was Spicewood Elementary in Round Rock ISD, which ranked 11th out of over 4,000 Texas elementary schools.

Westwood High School, also in in Round Rock ISD, received the Shell Oil Company award for Best Math and Science High School. Harmony Science Academy received the Shell award for Best Math and Science High School with a high number of economically disadvantaged students.
