Austin 4th Best City for Finding a Job in 2020

published on January 28, 2020

WalletHub named Austin, Texas the fourth best city in the United States to find a job in 2020. The study looked at 182 cities across the U.S. — the 150 most populated cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — and included two dimensions, “Job Market” and “Socio-economics.” Austin had an overall Job Market rank of sixth and an overall Socio-economics rank of 21st.

Some of the factors considered included job opportunities, employment growth, unemployment rate, employment outlook, industry variety, job security, job satisfaction, share of workers in poverty, median income, commute time, housing affordability, and more.

The top 10 rankings:

  1. Scottsdale, AZ
  2. South Burlington, VT
  3. San Francisco, CA
  4. Austin, TX
  5. Fremont, CA
  6. Chandler, AZ
  7. Boston, MA
  8. Tempe, AZ
  9. Portland, ME
  10. Boise, ID

As far as Texas cities, Plano came in 12th, Irving was 33rd, Grand Prairie was 41st, and Amarillo was 42nd, for the top 50 rankings. Plano was among the highest cities for median annual income. Brownsville, Texas was among the lowest for job opportunities and among the highest for unemployment rate, and Laredo was among the lowest for average starting salary.

The WalletHub report cited the most recent jobs report from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which rated national unemployment rate at 3.6 percent, slightly higher than the 50-year low of 3.5 percent in September 2019. It also cited the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which said employers “plan to hire 5.8 percent more members from the Class of 2020 than from the previous graduating cohort.”
