Art From the Streets – Austin’s Homeless Get Their Chance To Shine

published on December 22, 2011

Art From the Streets is a nonprofit organization that was established in the early 1990’s to help the poor and homeless of Austin gain a better sense of community and to give participants a creative outlet. Every December, Art From The Streets organizes the “Show and Sale” for the work of homeless artists in Austin communities who have participated in the weekly art seminars at the ARCH. They feature a variety of acrylic and oil paintings, pastel and chalk drawings, photography, and much more. All the original artwork is on sale starting around $35 with all sales proceeds going directly to the participants.

The nonprofit organization offers twice-weekly classes at the ARCH for the poor and homeless. At the end of every year, the “Show and Sale” is put in Downtown Austin, where people are encouraged to donate freely or to buy a piece to help the artists. In 2007, the 15th Annual show brought in $65,000 in art sales and admissions. All of the proceeds went to the artists and ARCH.

The annual shows help artists become more financially stable. Not only does Art From The Streets help the poor and homeless financially, it gives them the opportunity to stay creative when times are tough. It also helps participants socially, giving them a way to interact with others in a positive, encouraging environment.
