Tuscan-style homes blend the style of Old World Europe with modern design. Originally based on the architecture traditional in the region of Tuscany, Italy, this style of home includes earthy building materials and clean, simple lines to achieve a rustic yet refined appeal.

The exteriors of Tuscan homes have rough exteriors made of stone or stucco in a color palette that resembles the Tuscan hillside. They also usually have tall arched windows and arched openings, originally conceived for maximum light and air flow. Tile roofs are common, as are large courtyards complete with fountains and gardens.

Tuscan home interiors reflect the same cool and earthy tones, with plaster walls, high or vaulted beamed ceilings, and large fireplaces and mantels made of stone, marble, travertine, and rustic wood. Floors are often Terracotta or wood or also can be designed in mosaic or other artistic patterns. While Tuscan homes have an informal style, touches like wrought iron detailing, hand painted murals and ceiling stencils, and cobblestone walkways create an overall air of elegance. While most modern homes will only mimic the style, crumbling stone walls along walkways and patios add an air of romance.

Many homes in the Austin market will be referred to as “Texas Tuscan,” an offshoot of the Italianate Tuscan style that incorporates traditional native materials of Texas such as limestone into the Old World designs, as well as adding some of the bells and whistles that are popular among luxury home buyers, such as pool areas, home offices, boat docks, and more. Often these homes will have sleeker interior design as well.

In Austin, many neighborhoods incorporate Tuscan touches, and there are numerous neighborhoods that incorporate this style heavily into their master plans. Tuscan Village in Lakeway features both homes and condominiums in this style. In fact, many custom homes along Lake Travis in the Lakeway region are constructed as Tuscan-style homes. Barton Creek and Spanish Oaks in southwest Austin also feature a wide range of Tuscan homes, as do many of the custom construction neighborhoods in Westlake and the surrounding areas.
