“We searched the country for several years to find the best city within a city, the ideal spot to anchor as our last move,” said resident Bob Woods, who moved to Spanish Oaks in January of 2005. “What brought us to Austin was the exceptional mix of people and the incredible town vibe. What brought us to Spanish Oaks was (developer) Daniel Porter’s vision of a natural beauty. Ours was the fourteenth house. Mark Moulckers designed and built us the home, which fit us so well.”

Situated amidst 15,000 acres of unspoiled conservation land, Spanish Oaks residents enjoy wildlife sightings of Texas armadillos, wild turkeys, road runners, and foxes, even the occasional wildcat, feral pig, and rare black deer. “And, there's a bat colony under the bridge,” added Woods.

Three tidbits of Spanish Oaks history: What are the old cabins on the hill? A developer restored those 1850s-era Bohls family pioneer cabins and moved them there to preserve a snapshot of Austin history. Also, “the pasture to the right as you enter at the east entrance was once a rancher's landing strip for his Cessna,” shared Woods. Lastly, the east entrance traffic light is the “Ray Ware Memorial Light.” Ware lost a three and a half year battle with brain cancer in 2011. “Ray was an early salesman for Spanish Oaks, full of enthusiasm and likability,” said Woods.

The east entrance to the neighborhood opens up onto Highway 71 just south of its intersection with Bee Caves Road (RR 2244). On Highway 71, it lies about three miles north of the “Y” in Oak Hill. The main entrance, also opening up on Highway 71, is about 500 meters past its intersection with RR 620 and 1.8 miles north of the east entrance.

Spanish Oaks Parkway connects these two entrances, forming an undulating “U” along which the subdivisions of Spanish Oaks are strung like pearls. Little Barton Creek, which loosely follows Highway 71, shapes the northern half of the neighborhood. Barton Creek shapes the southern end. To the east is a neighborhood named the Homestead, and to the west, one called the Madrones.

The Fish Camp offers a well-stocked 4.5-acre lake with lighted pier, cat tails, and a rustic, willow–tree shaded bait shop. Wrapping around the southern side of the neighborhood, the Barton Creek greenbelt is a 400-acre natural sanctuary that provides Spanish Oaks homeowners serenity and seclusion. Along the northern side of the neighborhood are the 100 acres of natural habitat along Little Barton Creek.

Another boon is next door Barton Creek Preserve with its 10,000+ acres of native plants and trees that serve as a protective habitat for wildlife, including the golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo. A recharge point for the Edward’s Aquifer, it protects the water quality of the Barton Creek watershed and is home to the rare Barton Springs salamander.

Fifty-acre Bee Cave Central Park, less than a mile from Spanish Oaks, is a focal point for exercise and meeting with friends. Gym-aficionados head to nearby Gold’s Gym, Hottie Pilates, Westlake Crossfit, or Trio Life Fitness.

Live music aficionados in Spanish Oaks head around the corner to “The Backyard,” a historic outdoor amphitheater. Known as one of the top live entertainment venues in Austin, artists have included Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Lyle Lovett.

Animal lovers can head three miles south to make memories at the Austin Zoo, a private, non-profit sanctuary for rescued and rehabilitated animals. Interesting story: a kinkajou (a cute rain forest mammal) once escaped the Austin Zoo and visited a number of Spanish Oaks homes before being caught!

Shopping and Restaurants

Just across Highway 71 is the high-end Hill Country Galleria, an outdoor mall providing 1.2 million square feet of shopping, dining, and entertainment. Residents can enjoy a movie at its Cinemark Theatre, dine on fettuccine at Mimi’s Café or Tex-Mex at the Iron Cactus, then shop at its outdoor retail stores. In the winter, residents often grab a cup of coffee from Whole Foods Market and sit around the cozy outdoor fire pit.
