Southwest Austin is a popular part of Austin due to its environmental stewardship, lower crime rates, and excellent schools. The largest neighborhoods in the region are Circle C and Villages at Western Oaks, with numerous smaller neighborhoods such as Legend Oaks, Heights at Loma Vista, and Westcreek. Lewis Mountain Ranch and Granada Oaks, among other neighborhoods, offer homes on acreage.

Neighborhoods in southwest Austin can date back to the late 1970s, especially in Westcreek and the original Western Oaks, but many areas offer newer homes and even some new construction homes.

Freescale Semiconductor on West William Cannon and Advanced Micro Devices on Southwest Parkway are large employers in southwest Austin, and numerous other businesses, firms, and conveniences make this region of town highly desirable. Seton Southwest Hospital on FM 1826 is both a resource and an employer for the region.

This makes the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, where visitors can see and learn about native Texan plants and flowers, a perfect complement to the area. The Wildflower Center’s mission is to increase the sustainable use and conservation of native wildflowers, plants, and landscapes. Its location abutting Circle C makes it a popular spot for classes, tours, and events.

Also in southwest Austin is the Veloway , a 3.1 mile asphalt track for bicycling and rollerblading. “We love being close to the Veloway so we can load up our bikes and take a safe family ride because there are no vehicles on the Veloway. In the middle, it’s left natural with lots of trees and birds, and in the springtime, it’s full of bluebonnets. It’s a safe, hill country ride nestled within our neighborhood,” said Thompson.

Southwest Austin also is home to the Karst Preserve, an eight-acre area that is home to five caves, a sinkhole, and a walking trail, and the Goat Cave Preserve, an eight acre preserve sitting atop Edwards Limestone and containing numerous water-formed caves, sinkholes, and smaller openings.

circle c metropolitan parkCircle C Ranch Metropolitan Park on Slaughter Creek is a popular park of almost 550 acres, located off of Slaughter Lane. It is owned and operated by the City of Austin Parks Department and includes basketball courts, a large disc golf field, a multipurpose field, seven soccer fields, two volleyball courts, picnic tables, a playground, and almost six miles of trails.

Dick Nichols Park on Beckett Road features a large swimming pool and kiddie pool open year-round and a kids’ play area with swings, playscapes, and a water feature. It’s also home to a paved one-mile trail, a basketball court, volleyball and sand volleyball courts, two tennis courts, a multipurpose field, a large picnic shelter, and numerous picnic tables and barbecue pits.

Many neighborhoods also have their own parks and pools, such as Legend Oaks Neighborhood Park and Convict Hill Quarry Neighborhood Park, which still shows evidence of when the area was quarried for Texas State Capitol Building construction. Circle C also has private pools.

The Hampton Branch at Oak Hill Austin Public Library is on Convict Hill Road. The Hampton Branch opened in 1997 and is 8,400 square-feet. It has a walking trail, a reading gazebo, and is one of the busiest branches in the Austin Public Library system. Story times and other events are well attended at this branch. “We love the library,” said Thompson. “Our family enjoys being a few blocks from a City library, where we can check out books, get movies, and hang out, especially in the summer.”

The Austin Zoo, a functioning animal sanctuary, is in southwest Austin, with over 350 animals across over 100 species.

Also nearby is concert venue One World Theatre.

Golf

The Grey Rock Golf Club, an 18-hole championship golf course, makes its home in Circle C. It features 160 acres of oak trees and views and offers memberships, plus a Golf Academy.

Shopping and Restaurants

Natural Gardener , known as the “Organic Gardening Headquarters” of Austin, is a very popular stop for homeowners in southwest Austin.

Costco is a big draw, as is Whole Foods Market. For shopping, there are dozens of stores such as Haverty’s, Healthy Pet, Staples, and Wanderland. Food and drink establishments include Chuy’s, Kerbey Lane Café, Mandola's Italian Market, Double Dave’s Pizza Works, Tiff’s Treats, Torchy's Tacos, Fire House Subs, Yo-Way Frozen Yogurt, and more. Banks, business offices, and health establishments round out the center.

Along Circle C on Slaughter Lane is Parkside Village, anchored by a five-screen Alamo Drafthouse Theater and 400 Rabbits, a stand-alone cocktail lounge. Also in the center are Austin Diagnostic Clinic Circle C, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, TCBY, ATX Bikes, and Z Pizza.

At Escarpment and Slaughter Lane, bordering Villages at Western Oaks, is Escarpment Village. An HEB anchors the center, which straddles Escarpment.
