Shady Hollow is a large, established group of neighborhoods in Southwest Austin that is lauded for its beautiful canopy of trees and natural appeal. It is near the southernmost edge of Travis County and serves as a bridge for those wanting the convenience of the city and the tranquility of nature.

Developments in the area include the original Shady Hollow subdivision, plus Barker Ranch at Shady Hollow, Estates of Shady Hollow, Enclave at Shady Hollow, and Villages of Shady Hollow. While the neighborhoods were founded separately and operate under different homeowner associations, they are known collectively as “Shady Hollow.” Russ Downey, a 20-year-long resident of the original Shady Hollow, claimed, “We were so nice in Shady Hollow that everyone else wanted to hang onto our name.” He prides his neighborhood for starting a trend of “friendly, safe, and well maintained housing communities.”

The first Shady Hollow homes were built in the 1970’s, but most were constructed in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Downey and his wife bought their Shady Hollow home in 1991, and they’ve loved their location ever since.

Spacious and carefully tended yards are standard in Shady Hollow. Though some of the approximately 2,000 homes sit on typical 65-foot by 115-foot lots, quarter-acre, half-acre, and acre lots are common. Although new construction occasionally takes place, Downey claimed Shady Hollow’s popularity has filled all of its lots. “Many people want to move here because they can get more for their money in Southwest Austin,” he said.

Homes in Shady Hollow were built by David Weekley Homes, Scott Felder, Ryland, Randy Morine, Lennar, Doyle Wilson, Done Thomas Custom Homes, and more. One of the primary reasons Downey purchased his Shady Hollow home is because Scott Felder built it, of whom he said, “You can always expect quality.”

Neighborhood Location

In addition to those who work downtown, Shady Hollow’s location offers an easy commute to employees of large Southwest Austin companies such as Freescale Semiconductors and ARM.

Children in Shady Hollow attend the Austin Independent School District, a highly regarded educational system.

Neighborhood Associations

Neighborhood associations include Shady Hollow Homeowners Association,Barker Ranch at Shady Hollow, Estates of Shady Hollow, andVillages of Shady Hollow. Shady Hollow also is part of the Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods (OHAN), an organization representing 10,000 plus Southwest Travis County homeowners.

These associations help turn homes that share locality into a neighborhood; they initiate a sense of community and set common goals for residents. Downey, who is on the board of his homeowner’s association, said he and his crew “keep the neighborhood beautiful and communicative.” This includes ridding Shady Hollow of litter and hiring specialists to combat oak wilt in their trees. The HOA also organizes group events such as a winter holiday party, a spring egg hunt, and a 4th of July parade and celebration, which takes place at the Capistrano Park Pool.

Shady Hollow Amenities

tennis courtsShady Hollow is home to multiple parks and a community center. Capistrano Park features a swimming pool, a wading pool, two tennis courts, a basketball court, picnic tables, two playscapes, two playgrounds, and barbecue grills. The pool has six lap lanes and a diving well. Lifeguards are on duty during normal general swim. “Most of the pool’s lifeguards live in the neighborhood,” claimed Downey. He also said his neighborhood’s swim team, The Stingrays, practices and holds meets there.

Doe Run Park has two tennis courts, a basketball court, a meditation memorial park, a playground with equipment, a picnic gazebo, and is beside the David C. Ellis Community Center. Gatling Gun Park features a playscape, picnic tables, a soccer/baseball practice field, a walking path, and barbecue grills. Shady Hollow West Park also offers a nature trail and walking path, a playscape, and sitting benches. Families of deer often make appearances in Shady Hollow West, thanks to its unobstructed habitat.

The David C. Ellis Community Center provides two large meeting rooms that can be reserved by Shady Hollow Homeowner Association members for social functions. Each has kitchen facilities, tables, and chairs.

Just south on MoPac at La Crosse Avenue is the Veloway, a 3.1-mile asphalt track for bicycling and rollerblading.

The Grey Rock Golf Club, only a 10-minute drive from Shady Hollow, makes use of the hill country’s beautiful landscape. Course designer Jay Morrish plotted this 18-hole course over 160-acres of verdant terrain.

Shady Hollow also is 10 minutes away from Texas Trail Rides, a fully outfitted park that hosts horseback riding sessions.

Shady Hollow’s nearest library is the Hampton Library Branch at Oak Hill, which spans 8,400 square feet and displays art by David Everett.

Cultural Offerings

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center (across from the Veloway) epitomizes Austin’s natural beauty. Lady Bird Johnson’s efforts to enhance and sustain native plant life helped contribute to Austin’s lush and well-maintained vegetation, and her eco-friendly mindset still resonates among Austinites. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is an emblem of LBJ’s mission to let wildflowers flourish—even in the green patches along highways. Today, the University of Texas uses the wildflower center for botanical sustainability research and education. For a small fee, visitors can stroll through its native flower gardens.

Shopping and Restaurants

Shady Hollow Village Shopping Center at Slaughter and Brodie (the main entrance to the neighborhood) includes a Randall’s grocery store and numerous casual and fast food dining spots and banks, such as Galaxy Café, Brick Oven, Maudie’s Tex Mex, and University Federal Credit Union. Across the street are CVS Pharmacy, Sonic Drive-in, and Wells Fargo Bank. Just up Brodie are Crema Bakery, Nanami Sushi, and Brodie Park Market.

At the intersection of MoPac and Slaughter are Walgreen’s, Taco Bueno, Backspin Sports Bar, and more. Just west of MoPac on Slaughter is Parkside Village, anchored by a five-screen Alamo Drafthouse Theater and 400 Rabbits—a stand-alone cocktail lounge. Also in the center are Austin Diagnostic Clinic Circle C, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, TCBY, ATX Bikes, Z Pizza, KoKo FitClub, Sleep Experts, and AT&T.

Across the street on the north side of Slaughter is Escarpment Village, the first true “green” retail center in Austin. The center, which straddles Escarpment, is anchored by an HEB grocery store. Restaurants and food/drink establishments include Waterloo Ice House, Santa Rita Tex-Mex Cantina, Satellite Bistro & Bar, Mangieri’s Pizza Café, Austin Scoops, Starbucks, and The District.
