Nestled in Round Rock among a handful of subdivisions, Oakcreek is a neighborhood where basketball hoops line the streets, and the echoes of children and garden hoses and the soft rustling of trees fill the atmosphere.

Kevin Myers, a yearlong occupant of Oakcreek, said one of his favorite things about Oakcreek is its safe environment and the abundance of families, some of which have lived there since the neighborhood’s birth in 1986. City Data lists that families occupy 77.5% of the homes in Oakcreek. With a population of 762, that means roughly 590 families live there. In other words, children who live in Oakcreek have plenty of neighborhood friends.

Neighborhood Associations

Austin may be well on its way to reaching full capacity, but the suburbs still have room for growth. Just bring a swimming suit, tennis shoes, or a basketball, and Oakcreek will unfold the welcome mat. Oakcreek Amenities

hiking trails at oakcreekIn warmer weather—which occurs more often than not in Central Texas—the sound of clinking swings and splashing from the neighborhood pool and playscape animate the streets. Located right off of Oaklands Street, the Oakcreek Association Pool and jungle gym serve as convenient activities for residents throughout the subdivision. Myers said he “entertains his toddler by taking him to the pool and pushing him on the swing.”

Just beyond Fern Bluff Elementary lies something exciting for people of all ages within the 78681 zip code: nature trails. “I stay fit by running from here to Brushy Creek,” said Myers about Brushy Creek Regional Trail. According to roundrocktexas.gov, Round Rock plans to further extend the trail so it creates an interconnected web throughout the whole city. For now, Oakcreek dwellers can hike, bike, or run to Round Rock’s namesake—The Round Rock—a historical platform that protrudes from Brushy Creek. One hundred sixty three years ago, the sedimentary formation helped pioneers creek-cross. Today, it provides a nice photo opportunity, or, in typical Austin-area fashion, one could meditate atop it.

Oakcreek may be calm, but it is not isolated. Downtown Round Rock is just 2.5 miles away. There, residents can access community resources such as City Hall, the Public Library, and the Chamber of Commerce. And who said living in the suburbs means sacrificing good food? Cafes, restaurants, and bars sprinkle downtown Round Rock, including Main Street Grill,Star Co. Coffeehouse and Café, Round Rock Donuts, and Quinn’s Neighborhood Bar. Nor does one have to go without Austin-style primping. Hair and nail salons as well as blow-dry bars sit right alongside the restaurants.

Round Rock also is becoming known as a major medical center, with St. David’s, Seton, and Scott & White offering new facilities. The Texas A&M Health Science Center campus and the Texas State University Student Health Center also are in Round Rock, and St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center is at the subdivision entrance.

Round Rock Culture: Popular Activities

Clearly, Round Rock draws lifestyle influence from its nearest city. Austin is known for being one of the fittest cities in America, and Round Rock follows suit. Austin’s climate and landscape make it easy for residents to stay in shape. In roughly 30 minutes, Round Rockers can take advantage of Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail along Lake Austin or the Barton Creek Greenbelt—two hot spots for outdoor exercise. But, Round Rock is also fit in its own right. Known as the “Sports Capital of Texas,” this suburb encourages athletic engagement. Runners make use of the Round Rock High School track. Baseball enthusiasts visit this diamond . Youngsters who can do the splits show this gymnasium what they’ve got. Jacks of all athletic trades can pick and choose at the Austin Sports Arena.

Oakcreek residents who seek a more leisurely athletic pursuit need only travel about five miles to reach the nearest golf course, Avery Ranch Golf Club. And the Brushy Creek Regional Trail is not the sole resource for outdoor fun in Round Rock; those who enjoy spelunking can visit the Inner Space Caverns—located just 10 minutes away in Georgetown, TX. Lake Travis is another popular destination for water sport fans. To have some fun in a manmade facility, Round Rockers visit the Rock’N River Family Aquatic Center , a water park with slides, a lazy river, and fountains.
