Milwood is a northwest Austin neighborhood of mostly single-story, ranch style homes on grassy plots, with mature trees shading the streets and sidewalks. Spread over almost two square miles, Milwood has approximately 2,500 homes and is located in a quiet and convenient location. Just 14 miles from downtown, Milwood is in the 78729 and 78727 zip codes and has seen the city grow around its borders over the past two decades.

Though Milwood was established in the late 1970s, the majority of homes are more recent, with most built in the 1980s to 1990s. It’s common to find brick exteriors and comfortable backyards, many with patios and decks so residents can take advantage of the outdoors year-round. Neighborhood walking trails, fitness stations, outdoor pavilions, pools, and parks make outdoor fun a community affair. Nearby grocery stores such as HEB, along with retail, dining, and office parks, surround the area.

Ten-year Milwood resident and schoolteacher Cindy Burton summed up Milwood in five words: “safe, convenient, established, green, accessible.” She also commended her neighborhood for having a variety of real estate. “Milwood doesn’t have that ‘cookie-cutter’ kind of look,” Burton said. She also appreciates how Milwood’s large trees add character.

It is 14 miles from downtown Austin, with convenient access to Interstate 35, Highway 183, and MoPac (Loop 1), making Milwood an ideal location for those looking to ease their commute to and from work each day.

One of Burton’s favorite things about Milwood is its “accessibility.” She enjoys how her neighborhood “is between MoPac, 183, and Parmer, so a lot of main thoroughfares are reachable.” She also noted that Milwood is along bus routes and within a mile of a high-speed train station.

Depending on which area of the neighborhood residents live in, students will attend schools in theAustin Independent School District or Round Rock Independent School District.

Neighborhood Associations

Residents can be a part of the Milwood Neighborhood Association, which entails a small yearly fee to cover neighborhood maintenance and events. The Association’s website features an events calendar, current news, maps of the neighborhood, and information on development surrounding the area. The association holds community events throughout the year, like a park cleanup day, 4th of July celebration, neighborhood garage sale, and various picnics and barbeques.

Spanning more than 50 acres, Balcones District Park features many amenities that make it an ideal gathering spot for an evening or weekend get-together. It is home to barbeque pits, picnic tables, a volleyball court, basketball court, and playground. It also features a public swimming area and more than one mile of hiking and biking trails. At one point in the park, visitors can view a waterfall running through the area.
The Milwood Neighborhood Association maintains a community pool, playground, park, tennis courts, and jogging/bike trails for resident use.

Another green space, Old Stage Park, offers Milwood residents a basketball court, an off-leash dog area, a hiking and biking trail, picnic tables, a playscape, a sand volleyball court, soccer fields, and tennis courts. It is located on Hymeadow Drive to the north of Milwood.

Milwood’s amenities create an ideal environment for athletic communion. According to Burton, “the pool, the trails, and the bike lanes by Milwood make it perfect for a triathlete.” Three nights a week (mid-March through September), Burton meets just outside of her neighborhood to coach her triathlon team, Tri Cynergy. She and other team members also “keep a small running group going during winter to stay fit.”

Milwood golfers have easy access to The Balcones Country Club, which offers a pool and tennis courts in addition to a scenic golf course. The Avery Ranch Golf Club's course, which has won design awards from Avid Golfer Magazine, sprawls over the hill country and is roughly 10 minutes away by car from Milwood.

Libraries

The Milwood branch of the Austin Public Library is an 8,266 square-foot facility situated on a beautiful wooded site of 7.5 acres. It is strategically located between the Spicewood Springs and Little Walnut Creek branches and, together, the three facilities create a service triangle for meeting the informational needs of far north Austin.

Cultural Offerings

One of Austin’s most famous attractions, the Alamo Drafthouse Theater, has a location near Milwood. Milwood’s nearest Alamo is on 2700 West Anderson Lane—roughly ten minutes away by car. The Alamo Drafthouse entertains cinema buffs and completes the movie experience with a restaurant-quality menu.

Milwood children with a fish fascination can visit the new Austin Aquarium on 13530 North Highway 183.

Marmalade Skies Arts and Crafts Studio (13450 North Highway 183) provides paint galore to artists of all skill levels. It even holds adult finger painting sessions.

IFly Indoor Skydiving Austin caters to adventure seekers. Milwood residents can get an adrenaline rush at IFly in roughly seven minutes.

The Main Event Entertainment on North Highway 183 is about five miles from Milwood. It provides another indoor version of an extreme sport with its rock climbing wall. The Main Event also serves party food, conducts happy hours, and has birthday party needs under control with laser tag, bowling, billiards, mini-golf, and video games.

Shopping and Restaurants

Milwood is near multiple large shopping complexes, each with a satisfying diversity of stores.

The Domain is just four miles south of Milwood. The Domain shopping center features over 40 selections for upscale and mainstream retail and restaurant enjoyment. High-end retailers include Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., and Austin’s first Neiman Marcus, as well as traditional mall stores like Macy’s and Express. Restaurants include Daily Grill, Maggiano's Little Italy, McCormick & Schmick's, NoRTH, and many more. The Domain also features luxury apartment living and high-end office space.

Lakeline Mall, located six miles from Milwood on the border of Cedar Park, is anchored by Dillard's, JCPenney, Macy's, and Sears. The mall includes more than 150 specialty stores and a nine-screen Regal Theatre. Lakeline Plaza and Lakeline Village are located adjacent to Lakeline Mall and offer an additional 10 anchor stores, including Best Buy, Old Navy, and TJMaxx, plus over 20 specialty stores. Surrounding restaurants include Chili's, Applebee's, Texican Café, and Plucker's.

Groceries

Whole Foods locations continue to emerge throughout its flagship city, with the newest one opening in January 2014 at The Domain. Another Whole Foods location on 9607 Research Boulevard is equally as close to Milwood. Sprouts Farmers Market on Research Boulevard also primarily sells health food provisions. For standard grocery needs, the HEB on 6001 West Parmer Lane and the Randall’s on 10900 Research Boulevard have Milwood covered.
