Georgetown, Texas is a city about half an hour north of Austin. Home to about 50,000 residents, this picturesque town is located between the waters of the North and South San Gabriel Rivers and near the hills of central Texas. Georgetown is known as the “Red Poppy” capital of Texas for its splendid display of red poppy wildflowers each spring, and an annual Red Poppy Festival in April attracts up to 30,000 visitors. Georgetown has a significant historical presence in terms of buildings, with much Victorian commercial and residential architecture. It is home to Southwestern University, which is Texas’ oldest university, founded in 1840. The town itself was founded in 1848.

Georgetown also hosts the large retirement community of Sun City. Resident Alice Reedholm said with the addition of Sun City, Georgetown’s population nearly doubled. She believes “the addition of community retirees to my city bettered its culture and increased diversity.” And, she said, the retirement residents enrich Georgetown by “doing tons of volunteer work.” Reedholm believes their presence is especially great for younger residents. “It’s always so adorable to see a crowd of retired folks arrive at high school football games.”

Properties in Georgetown

House in GeorgetownA sense of peace and comfort is so palpable in Georgetown that one can’t help but smile while walking along its wide streets. Wind chime music lulls neighborhood dwellers into tranquility. The homes too, reflect peaceful optimism with decorative Victorian trimming and colorful paint. Smaller homes are charming storybook abodes, while some of the larger homes look as though Queen Victoria commissioned them herself. Large lawns separate houses by a healthy distance. Many yards display well-tended gardens; many others have fence-bound lawn lots that hold pools or landscaped garden patios.

“There is a lot of pride in Georgetown,” said Reedholm. “Most residents have made the conscious decision to live here and not in Austin.” Why? Reedholm claimed this is due to a “strong community feel” — local coffee shops see regulars gather around a chessboard at the same time each week, for example — and Georgetown, like Austin or Round Rock, also offers its own school system.

Neighborhood Associations

Georgetown has 46 homeowner and neighborhood associations. A few of them have publicized their contact information. The city’s official website keeps residents updated on cultural happenings, local news, business listings and analysis, general “how to’s” about home keeping, and much more. It also exemplifies the high value residents place on community.

Georgetown Amenities

Retirees may constitute a large portion of Georgetown’s population, but that doesn’t mean the folks who live there are idle. Numerous recreational resources keep Georgetown active.

Golf

Berry Creek Golf Club is a private golf course on 115 acres, with lengths ranging from 5,110 yards to 6,649 yards.

Cowan Creek Golf Club is a resort-style public course with rolling fairways, water features, large landing areas, and generous greens. Designed by Gary Stevenson, Cowan Creek is the newest championship golf course in Sun City.

Georgetown Country Club offers an 18-hole regulation length golf course with water hazards on 12 holes. The historic course is in a valley that homes an abundance of wildlife.

Legacy Hills Golf Club is an 18-hole public course designed by PGA champion Billy Casper and golf architect Greg Nash. It is recognized as one of the best golf courses in the Texas Hill Country.

White Wing Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72, public course on 118 acres with three lakes. It has a nine-acre practice range and a putting green.

Parks and Recreation

poppy festivalThe Texas Recreation & Parks Society named San Gabriel Park a Lone Star Legacy park in 2012. It houses concerts, festivals, and sporting events, and it is home to the Georgetown Community Center. San Gabriel Park also includes a skate park, which features ramps, grind boxes, rails, half pipes, and quarter pipes.

Off-leash dogs run free at Bark Park, while their owners enjoy the park’s ample shade.

Campers, hikers, and fishermen frequent Berry Spring Park’s 300-acre space to relax and connect with nature.

Historic Founder’s Park honors Williamson County’s first six commissioners, who chose a location for the county seat here in May 1848.

Adventure seekers tackle the Georgetown Challenge Course, a year-round course with low team elements and 22 high elements, including parallel zip lines and two rock climbing walls.

Blue Hole is a lagoon on the South San Gabriel River in a park lined by limestone bluffs. Cedar Breaks Park offers 64 campsites with water and electric hookups. Other parks include Jim Hogg Park, Lake Georgetown, and Russell Park.

Georgetown Indoor Pool stays open year-round, and the Georgetown Recreation Center keeps residents cool with its outdoor pool and splash pool.

Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department maintains three Disc Golf Courses: 9-hole courses Pinnacle Disc Golf Course and San Gabriel Park Golf Course and 18-hole Disc Golf Course in Rivery Park.

Georgetown Tennis Center offers 11 hard surface lighted tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a clubhouse.

A popular tourist attraction, Inner Space Caverns is a living karst cave that is estimated to be 100 million years old, and several prehistoric Ice Age skeletons have been found there. Today, visitors can traverse its 1.2 miles of public viewing passages.

Libraries

Georgetown Public Library covers 49,500 square feet and offers more than 80,000 items. Kids, teens, and adults commune here for book and chess clubs.

Cultural Offerings

georgetown palace“Georgetown is still very cultured despite its small size,” said Reedholm. Georgetown’s downtown square flaunts Victorian architecture and other historical buildings. At its center, Williamson County Courthouse touches the sky with neoclassical grandeur — drivers even can spot it from the freeway. Quaint shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, and other businesses surround the courthouse.

Georgetown’s cultural enrichment roots from its town square. The Palace Theatre hosts year-round live theater productions, the Williamson Museum promotes the culture and heritage of Williamson County, and Georgetown Art Center describes itself as “a welcoming environment for visitors to view, create, and purchase art.” But, it functions as more than just an art gallery; its studio also holds art and yoga classes.

Shopping and Restaurants

Shopping options vary in Georgetown, with many retail stores in the historic downtown area. Options include Abbey’s Bar Stools and More, Bell Embroidery, Just Kidds & More, and The Escape Fine Crafts and Gifts. Restaurants include ROOTS Bistro, Filomena, Pizzeria Paradiso, Clyde’s of Georgetown, Baked & Wired, Georgetown Cupcake, The Tombs, Bangkok Joe’s, Mai Thai, Café Bonaparte, and Kafe Leopold.

Groceries
