When it comes to premiere communities north of Austin, Pflugerville’s Falcon Pointe sets the standard. Officially founded in 1860, the city was named after Henry Pfluger, who immigrated to the area in 1849 during the Prussian War by purchasing 160 acres of land from a brother-in-law. Henry raised sugar cane, sweet potatoes, beans, rye, wheat, corn, and cattle, which he and his sons drove to market on the Chisolm Trail.

According to Money Magazine, Pflugerville ranked 50th in America’s top small cities. “Money Magazine saw what we already know about Pflugerville: it’s a great place to live!” said Mayor Jeff Coleman, a Falcon Pointe resident. “With our safe streets, beautiful park system, recognized school district, and incredible community spirit, it’s evident why Pflugerville is in the top 100. As we continue to grow in population and add restaurants, shopping centers, and employment opportunities, Pflugerville is continuing to receive attention nationwide as a great place to live and raise a family.”

Newland Communities (2010 “Developer of the Year”) is the master developer of Falcon Pointe, and Bill Meyer is General Manager of its Austin division: “We celebrated our 10th anniversary this year, and we have five more years of new home development in front of us. There are about 900 completed homes in Falcon Pointe, with 500 more to come.”

Falcon Pointe includes over a dozen subdivisions*, with built and to-be-built designs by three builders: Ryland, Centerra, and Lennar Homes. Each builder offers its distinct style in two versions, called “series” or “collections”:

Centerra Homes, founded in Austin, has been building homes for over 40 years and specializes in beautiful, functional, affordable, and green designs. “We have Austin homeowners who have reported August electricity bills of $115 or less on homes with this exciting new energy efficiency technology,” said Dan Arnot, Centerra’s sales consultant in Falcon Pointe. Its Classic Series offers 3- to 4-bedroom homes ranging from 2,000 to 3,500 square feet starting in the $200s. Its upgraded signature series offers the same, but starts in the $230s.

Lennar Homes, one of the nation’s leading builders, claims to cater to all lifestyles and generations with its “everything you want, everything you need” motto. Its 3- to 4-bedroom Brookstone Collection starts in the $180s for 1,500 to 3,000 square feet and 2 to 2.5 bathrooms.

Its Lakeside Collection offers all this, plus location, and starts in the $220s.

Lone Star Park will feature Lennar’s new Oak Knoll collection (created especially for homebuyers who are starting out or looking to scale down). Adjacent to the new 26-acre Central Park, its plans offer flexibility, allowing buyers to customize new homes by adding a study, extra bedroom, or bath. Priced from the mid $100s, these one- and two-story designs range from approximately 1,400 to 2,800 square feet.

“Texas is on the top of the list nationally for economic development, and Pflugerville is a shining star in Texas,” said Floyd Akers, Executive Director of Pflugerville Community Development Corporation. “We’re five minutes from both Dell and Samsung. We have the highest median income and the most highly educated population of any city in Central Texas.”

This Pflugerville neighborhood is bordered by Hwy 130 to the west, 685 Commercial Park to the North, The Villages of Hidden Lake neighborhood to the east, and E. Pflugerville Parkway to the south. The zip code is 78660, and the MLS Map Location area is N. One of Falcon Pointe’s major draws is its freeway access in three directions. The neighborhood is located east of the intersection of Texas 130 toll road and the Texas 45 toll road and north of Austin (see Austin homes for sale). It is also convenient for Austin’s newest transportation system, the Capital Metro Transit. The commute to downtown Austin from Falcon Pointe is 16 miles.

“We are especially excited about our new south entrance,” said Vaike O’Grady, marketing director for Newland Communities. The entrance will be located at the intersection of Pflugerville Parkway and Texas 130, offering a quick commute to downtown Austin. The South Entrance also will provide great access for the new Falcon Pointe neighborhoods, including Lone Star Park, Copperleaf, and Parkline Trail.

Neighborhood Associations

The Resident Club’s Activities Director helps coordinate the social calendar for Falcon Pointe. Houghton offered her insider’s view of what gives the community its warm and neighborly feel. “More than any community I’ve ever seen, residents in Falcon Pointe play a major role in planning events and activities. It’s very resident-driven.” As for adult activities, Houghton is a big fan of the community’s popular Wine Club.

Shopping & Dining

It doesn’t matter whether it’s garden mulch, groceries for the weekend, or sports equipment, The Stone Hill Town Center is where residents head for the things they need. Located directly across the highway from Falcon Pointe, it offers retail (Home Depot, Petco, Best Buy, Super Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods), restaurants like Chili’s and Chick-fil-A, and a Cinemark Theatre.

Just a mile west, Pfluger Crossing is a brand new outdoor retail center offering stores like Radio Shack, Starbuck’s, Baskin Robbins, Sally’s Beauty Supply, Pflugerville Donuts, GameStop, and Go Dental.

Market Plaza strip center is three miles northwest. It has eateries like Urban Picnic and Thai Spoon, as well as an art school and retail stores like Rick’s Cleaners.

For upscale dining, shopping, and entertainment, residents head southwest to The Domain: an outdoor, mixed-use development on North MoPac Expressway near Braker Lane. Stores like The Apple Store, Whole Foods Market, Puma, Neiman Marcus, and Coach stand alongside restaurants from Fleming’s to The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

Cultural Offerings

Learn about the history of Pflugerville at the Heritage House museum, or shop for produce at the Tuesday Pfarmer’s Market during the summer months. Enjoy Pflugerville’s annual festivals like the Deutschen Pfest, Spring Pfling, the Pfirecracker Pfestival, and the Pfall Chili Pfest!

In 2005, Pflugerville citizens erected the Fallen Warrior Memorial: a limestone amphitheater with three life-size bronze soldiers and a granite pentagon inscribed with names of the deceased.

Eight miles southwest, Pioneer Farms offers five Texas history-themed areas to explore: a Cotton Planter's Farm, a Tonkawa Indian Encampment, a German Emigrant Farm, a Texian Farm, and a rural village called Sprinkle Corner.

The nearest library is Pflugerville Community Library, which is just over three miles southwest.

Groceries

For groceries, Falcon Pointe residents can drive a couple miles southwest to HEB, hit the Randall’s five miles northwest, or head to the Wal-Mart Supercenter five miles due north. Ikea-lovers will appreciate the only central Texas location just nine miles north.

Houghton’s daughters are now in middle school and high school, but she fondly remembers the Falcon Pointe playgroups they enjoyed as small children: “It’s been wonderful to see our daughters develop such close friendships. Just a few months ago, our oldest daughter started her first day of high school surrounded by friends she’s had since elementary.”
