Austin Jobs Statistics Looking Up in November 2012

austin economy adds jobsStatistics compiled by the Austin Chamber of Commerce from the Texas Workforce Commission and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, among others, reflect a continued strong economic market in Austin. Notably, Austin ranks number three in the United States in job growth with a 3.5% change over the last 12 months, resulting in 28,200 new jobs in public and private sectors. Austin is now 44,200 jobs ahead of its pre-recession peak jobs total.

In regards to unemployment, Austin has the second lowest rate out of the 50 largest metro areas, at 5.3%, compared to 6.6% this time last year. Austin’s fastest growing jobs segment over the last 12 months was “Professional and Business Services,” which added 10,700 jobs.

The Austin unemployment rate (Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos) had a significant decrease from 7.2% to 6.8% in September 2010 with 4,200 more people employed in Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos in September 2010 than the previous month.  January’s unemployment rate was the highest rate on record since 2000 in the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area so the decrease in unemployment is welcome. In comparison, during the same time period the State of Texas unemployment rate decreased from 8.4% in August 2010 to 7.9% in September 2010.  The United States unemployment rate decreased from 9.5% in August 2010 to 9.2% in September 2010. The Austin unemployment rate (Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos) decreased slightly from 7.3% to 7.2% in August 2010 with 1,100 more people employed in Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos in August 2010 than the previous month due to a decrease in the Civilian Labor Force by 100 people and a decrease in those unemployed of 1,200.  In comparison, during the same time period the State of Texas unemployment rate decreased slightly from 8.5% in July 2010 to 8.4% in August 2010.  The United States unemployment rate decreased from 9.7% in July 2010 to 9.5% in August 2010. Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos unemployment rate continues to be much lower than the National Average.

The Austin unemployment rate (Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos) decreased slightly from 7.4% to 7.3% in July 2010 with 4,400 more people employed in Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos in July 2010 than the previous month due to an decrease in the Civilian Labor Force by 3,900 people and a decrease in those unemployed of 500.  In comparison, during the same time period the State of Texas unemployment rate remained stable at 8.5% from June 2010 to July 2010.  The United States unemployment rate increased slightly from 9.6% in June 2010 to 9.7% in July 2010. Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos unemployment rate continues to be much lower than the National Average.

The Austin unemployment rate (Austin-Round Rock) remained steady at 6.9% in December 2009 with 3,700 fewer people employed and 100 more people unemployed in Austin-Round Rock in December 2009 than the previous month due to an decrease in the Civilian Labor Force by 3,600 people.  In comparison, during the same time period the State of Texas unemployment rate increase from 7.9% in November 2009 to 8% in December  2009.  The United States decreased unemployment slightly raised from 9.7% in December 2009 from 9.4% in November 2009.
