“Our terrific volunteers work hard to make sure that the train ride is a memorable experience,” said Holly Doggett, who directs the Austin Steam Train Association 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization near Avery Ranch. “We do have something to offer passengers of all ages, so step on board and step back in time,” she enticed.

Buy a Christmas Tree and Help Area Youth: Austin Optimist Club Tree Lot Turns 60!

Austin Christmas trees When Austinites visit the Christmas tree lot at the corner of San Gabriel and North Lamar near the UT Campus, they invest in more than just a holiday tree. This tree lot is run by the Austin Optimist Club – a civic organization dedicated to serving the youth of the greater Austin area.

For almost 60 years, every nickel of the Optimist Club's tree sales proceeds have gone to Austin-area youth charities. (Scroll down to see a list of the youth organizations supported by the Austin Optimist Club, from Dell Children’s Medical Center to Blue Santa.)

The lot sells several types of trees: Noble Firs, Fraser Firs, Grand Firs, Natural Douglas Firs, and Scotch Pines. They come as small as two feet and as tall as ten feet. This year, the lot also will be selling

Austin-area Home Sales and Prices See Nine Percent October Increases

austin real estate prices 2013All across Austin, homebuyers spent more this October than they would have spent last October purchasing homes. According to the Multiple Listing Service report released by the Austin Board of REALTORS®, home sales and prices each rose nine percent in October 2013.

According to the report, the median price for Austin-area homes, from Lakeway to Falcon Pointe, was $217,000, nine percent more than the previous October. Interestingly, home sales also were up nine percent from the same month last year, with 2,145 single-family homes sold.

Given the last year of steady sales volume and home price increases, many have begun to wonder if Austin is in a housing bubble,” said Cathy Coneway, President of the Austin Board of REALTORS®. “This is not the case.
