September saw the fastest rate of new, single-family home construction nationally since July 2008, and this spike indicates the housing recovery is strengthening across the country. The Commerce Department reported that builders broke ground at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 872,000 units in September. That's an increase of 15% from August, and applications for building permits, a sign of future construction, jumped nearly 12% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 894,000, also the highest since July 2008.
Sales of new and previously owned homes have been steadily improving this year, and home prices are starting to show consistent gains in markets across the U.S. Record-low mortgage rates have encouraged more people to buy, and the Federal…

South Austin’s eclectic pockets, located near neighborhoods like Circle C and Travis Country, are known for distinct Austin flavor, metaphorically and literally. Strange Brew, a coffee shop on Manchaca Road, achieves both. Locally owned and 70% locally sourced, the 24/7 coffee spot features Third Coast Coffee’s organic, fair trade espresso and coffee, Zhi Tea, and snacks from Rock Star Bagels, Quack's 43rd Street Bakery, and Torchy’s Tacos.
Seventy percent of Strange Brews’ menu comes straight from Austin vendors, including the coffee beans, croissants, wraps, pastries, herbal teas, hot chocolate, Italian sodas, and locally brewed craft beers. Paninis developed by Torchy’s Tacos owner Mike Rypka are a customer favorite, and Strange Brew soon will start…

Travis County tends to get most of the national spotlight for growth and desirability, but Williamson County, home to the Falcon Pointe and Avery Ranch neighborhoods, recently gained attention from CNN Money as the number three county in the country for high-job growth rates. CNN ranked 25 counties, and Texas earned five coveted spots, all in the top ten.
Williamson County’s job growth from 2000–11 was 73.8%, according to the listing. CNN Money’s listing attributed the success of Williamson County’s job growth to incentives for companies from cities throughout the county and to low property taxes. “Cities in Williamson County have done a good job of working with companies to identify specific needs and how those needs can be met in order to bring that…

While Austin may be perceived as a hip, laidback city, this nature is what draws out the creativity and startup/business success that has pumped large amounts of money into our local economy. That foundation for dynamic possibilities, coupled with friendliness toward music, nature, and people in general, attracts individuals and companies from around the world. While many Austin residents love living in “a small town within a big city,” the truth is, we’ve grown up, and that is evident in the growing number of high-dollar real estate transactions. Austin luxury real estate now comprises a sizeable segment of Austin home sales, and, these days, that “Average Joe” or “Average Jane” we see at the coffee shop just might be a multi-millionaire startup mogul,…

The use of midwives is growing steadily in the United States. According to a report in the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health analyzing two decades of trends released by the Centers for Disease Control, the proportion of births attended by midwives reached an all-time high of 8.1 percent in 2009. CDC data shows that 1 in every 8 American women who gave birth vaginally that year was attended by a midwife!
Eager to meet the growing demand for midwifery in Central Texas, the Austin Area Birth Center is also one of the only birthing centers in the U.S. to have multiple clinics. The traditional midwifery care and professional medical experience offered by Austin ABC has become a popular alternative to hospital or home births for Austin moms-to-be, and, in…

The fundamentals of the overall Austin housing market look great! Austin is currently marked by low inventory, increased home sales, increased prices, increased pending sales, decreased withdrawals, decreased days on market, and rising lease prices. When comparing September 2012 to September 2011, sold prices are up slightly by 1.76%, which shows a little cooling off from the last few months. However, sold prices per square foot are still on the rise with a 6.77% increase comparing the same time frame. Amazingly, interest rates have decreased to an average of 3.36% for a 30 year conventional loan today with 0.6 fees/points down per freddiemac.com. The Austin unemployment rate (Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos) reduced significantly from 6.4% in July 2012 to…
